Session Save Path Unwritable in Joomla! Install?

I have to install one of my Joomla! sites manually because Fantastico De Luxe in my server is no longer working. After I uploaded my Joomla! files to my server (using FTP), I typed my website's url in the browser; it automatically directed me to the Joomla! installation page which allowed me to have pre-installation checked all my files' permissions. Everything is writable (green color) except Session Save Path which is unwritable (red color). If you leave it alone not to fix it, it will cause back end login problem. So it cannot be ignored.

I searched the web for a solution, this article has covered pretty much every case; but it did not solve mine. I have to create a folder called session in the same directory as configuration.php is (using FTP), then I have to download index.php, which is in installation folder, to my local computer. It is important that you make a copy and save it somewhere else before you go on. Then I have to find the codes below:

<td class="item">
Session save path
</td>
<td align="left" valign="top">
<?php echo is_writable( $sp ) ? '<b><font color="green">Writeable</font></b>' : '<b><font color="red">Unwriteable</font></b>';?>
</td>

and replace them with the following codes:
<td class="item">
Session save path
</td>
<td align="left">
<b><?php ini_set('session.save_path','/home/airlinet/public_html/intetnet/session'); ?></b>,
<b><?php echo (($sp=ini_get('session.save_path'))?$sp:'Not set'); ?></b>,
<?php echo is_writable( $sp ) ? '<b><font color="green">Writeable</font></b>' : '<b><font color="red">Unwriteable</font></b>';?>
</td>

Pay attention to the red color path, find yours from your web server and replace it. After I edited and saved index.php, I uploaded it back to installation folder. I refreshed the screen that had given me Session Save Path Unwritable. Hooray! It turned Unwritable (red color) to be Writable (green color). Hope this tip can help someone who encountered the same problem as I had. Like to discuss more, please leave your comments here.

Issues Emerge From My Google Webmaster Tools Account

I checked the stats of my Joomla! website lately from Google Webmaster Tools account. I was really shocked to see all the negative things showing up there: Not found(5), Duplicate meta descriptions(9), Short meta descriptions(3), and Duplicate title tags(25). And most of these issues were caused by the forum that I've set up for my Joomla! website earlier. My main concern now is to find solutions for these problems.

How to fix pages not found problems?

Usually these pages are not existing so I just ask Google to remove the urls for me. This is how I've accomplished this task.

  • Log in to my Google Webmaster Tools account, click on my website/Diagnostics/Web crawl/Not found to find out the urls.
  • Click on Tools/Remove URLs/New Remove Request.
  • Select Individual URLs: web pages, images, or other files ...
  • Click on Next>> button.
  • A new page shows up, enter the url that was listed as not found in the text field, and make sure you only keep the portion after http://www.yoursite.com/.
  • Choose Google web search results.
  • Click Add button/Submit Removal Request.
  • Repeat the above steps for other urls to be removed.
It will tell you that your url removal is pending and will take 3-5 days to finish the process. So you need to check back to see the update. Alternatively you may create a 404 pages for those not found pages.

How to fix duplicate meta descriptions and/or duplicate title tags and/or short meta descriptions?

Basically I can use Sh404sef to solve these problems. See this post here: How to Optimize Your Joomla! Website?. However, some of these problems here were generated by Fireboard, Sh404sef does not seem to be able to pick up the urls, so I can't rewrite them to be more search engine friendly. See one of the examples here: http://www.internetoutput.com/Forum/?catid=11&func=credits. I will find a solution for this, so stay tune...

Update: I use a robots.txt to fix forum problems. Read more from this article here: What Should be Included in a Robots.txt?

How to Edit Rules and Help Pages in Joomla!'s FireBoard?

Last week I talked about How to Set Up FireBoard for a Joomla! website? Then I came to the problem of how to edit Rules and Help pages in FireBoard. I am using Joomla! 1.0.15 for my website. So in order to make Rules and Help pages work in Joomla!'s FireBoard, you need to do a couple of things listed below:

  1. Log in to your Joomla! admin area.
  2. Click on Static Content Manager/New.
  3. Edit your Rules file and save it.
  4. Find out your Rules ID number.
  5. Now on the main menu click on Components/FireBorad Forum/FireBoard Configuration.
  6. Scroll half way down to find Rules Content ID and enter your Rules ID number there.
  7. Scroll all the way to the top and save your change.
For the Help page you just have to repeat the similar steps as above, just make sure in step 6 you find Help Content ID and enter your Help ID number there which you should have found out from step 4. I have just created both Rules and Help pages in my website's forum for the FireBoard, and they both work beautifully. If you have any related issues, feel free to drop your words.

How to Set Up FireBoard For a Joomla! Website?

I've just installed a forum for my Joomla! website using FireBoard. It is a fully integrated forum solution for Joomla! No bridges and no hacking are needed. I've been thinking to add a forum to internetoutput.com for a while. Adding a forum to your blog/website is the best way of letting your visitors to convey their thoughts, ask questions, and get answers. If you have a Joomla! site, then it is pretty easy to implement it.

  • Download com_fireboard_v1.0.5RC2_b817_2008-10-27 to your computer/laptop and don't unzipped it.
  • Log in to your Joomla! admin interface.
  • Click on Installers/Components in main menu.
  • Browse com_fireboard_v1.0.5RC2_b817_2008-10-27 file you've just downloaded earlier.
  • Hit Upload Files & Install button to upload it.
  • If you succeed, it'll said "Upload component - Success ... [Continue...]"
  • Go to Components/FireBoard Forum in main menu and configure it the way you like.
That is all. Here is the site: Home Based Online Business Opportunities - Forum. Check it out. What do you think?
