How to Migrate Joomla! 1.0.x to Joomla! 1.5.x?

I am still using Joomla 1.0.15 for one of my sites. Now I am thinking to upgrade it to Joomla! 1.5.x. The reason being is Joomla! 1.0.x is no longer supported. Also hackers can hack the older version of Joomla! easily. So it is time for me to move on. I know it is not easy but I have to do it...I will write down the steps along the way. Here they are...

  • Backup all my files of Joomla! 1.0.15 to my desktop through FTP
  • Login to my hosting cPanel
  • Click on phpMyAdmin to export my database to my desktop
  • Download Joomla! 1.5.24 from Download Joomla! to my desktop
  • Download the Migrator component to my desktop
  • Install the Migrator component to my existing Joomla! 1.0.15 site
  • Login to my Joomla! 1.0.15 backend
  • Click on Components/Migrator
  • Then click on Create Migration SQL File
  • Next click on Start Migration >>
  • Then click on Download to save SQL Dump from my Joomla! 1.0.15 to my desktop
  • Next make a clean Joomla 1.5.24 installation in a new folder for instance internet
  • Then upload Joomla! 1.5.24 to http://www.mywebsite.com/internet
  • Next type that url in my browser to run the installtion
  • Then choose my language and click on Next
  • Next check whether everything is okay if not it should be corrected and click on Next
  • Then read GNU General Public License and click on Next
  • Next go to my server and create a new database. Jot down the username and password for the next step.
  • Then fill in Database Type, Host Name, Username, Password, and Database Name and click on Next
  • Next fill in FTP user, FTP Password, FTP Root Path for FTP Configuration and click on Next
  • Then for Main Configuration fill in Site Name, I leave Your Email, Admin Username, Admin Password, and Confirm Admin Password blank.
  • Next I have to tick next to the Load Migration Script option, fill in the old table prefix jos_, leave the Old Site Encoding the way it is, browse the Joomla 1.0.x migration dump that I downloaded earlier, tick next to This script is a Joomla! 1.0 migration script, and hit Upload and execute button
  • Then I see "Migration successful. Press Next to continue". So I just click on Next
  • Finally I have to remove installation folder
After that I find out my Joomla! 1.0.x theme is not compatible with Joomla! 1.5.x. Also my images, my favicon, all my components are gone. So I have to work hard to get them back.

P.S. I try to migrate to Joomla! 1.7.x directly but it will not allow me to do so. So instead I have to migrate to Joomla! 1.5.x instead. My next post will be How to Upgrade Joomla! 1.5.x to Joomla! 1.7.x. So stay tune for that...

Session Save Path Unwritable in Joomla! Install?

I have to install one of my Joomla! sites manually because Fantastico De Luxe in my server is no longer working. After I uploaded my Joomla! files to my server (using FTP), I typed my website's url in the browser; it automatically directed me to the Joomla! installation page which allowed me to have pre-installation checked all my files' permissions. Everything is writable (green color) except Session Save Path which is unwritable (red color). If you leave it alone not to fix it, it will cause back end login problem. So it cannot be ignored.

I searched the web for a solution, this article has covered pretty much every case; but it did not solve mine. I have to create a folder called session in the same directory as configuration.php is (using FTP), then I have to download index.php, which is in installation folder, to my local computer. It is important that you make a copy and save it somewhere else before you go on. Then I have to find the codes below:

Session save path

<?php echo is_writable( $sp ) ? 'Writeable' : 'Unwriteable';?>

and replace them with the following codes:

Session save path

<?php ini_set('session.save_path','/home/airlinet/public_html/intetnet/session'); ?>,
<?php echo (($sp=ini_get('session.save_path'))?$sp:'Not set'); ?>,
<?php echo is_writable( $sp ) ? 'Writeable' : 'Unwriteable';?>

Pay attention to the red color path, find yours from your web server and replace it. After I edited and saved index.php, I uploaded it back to installation folder. I refreshed the screen that had given me Session Save Path Unwritable. Hooray! It turned Unwritable (red color) to be Writable (green color). Hope this tip can help someone who encountered the same problem as I had. Like to discuss more, please leave your comments here.

How to Edit Rules and Help Pages in Joomla!'s FireBoard?

Last week I talked about How to Set Up FireBoard for a Joomla! website? Then I came to the problem of how to edit Rules and Help pages in FireBoard. I am using Joomla! 1.0.15 for my website. So in order to make Rules and Help pages work in Joomla!'s FireBoard, you need to do a couple of things listed below:

  1. Log in to your Joomla! admin area.
  2. Click on Static Content Manager/New.
  3. Edit your Rules file and save it.
  4. Find out your Rules ID number.
  5. Now on the main menu click on Components/FireBorad Forum/FireBoard Configuration.
  6. Scroll half way down to find Rules Content ID and enter your Rules ID number there.
  7. Scroll all the way to the top and save your change.
For the Help page you just have to repeat the similar steps as above, just make sure in step 6 you find Help Content ID and enter your Help ID number there which you should have found out from step 4. I have just created both Rules and Help pages in my website's forum for the FireBoard, and they both work beautifully. If you have any related issues, feel free to drop your words.

How to Set Up FireBoard For a Joomla! Website?

I've just installed a forum for my Joomla! website using FireBoard. It is a fully integrated forum solution for Joomla! No bridges and no hacking are needed. I've been thinking to add a forum to internetoutput.com for a while. Adding a forum to your blog/website is the best way of letting your visitors to convey their thoughts, ask questions, and get answers. If you have a Joomla! site, then it is pretty easy to implement it.

  • Download com_fireboard_v1.0.5RC2_b817_2008-10-27 to your computer/laptop and don't unzipped it.
  • Log in to your Joomla! admin interface.
  • Click on Installers/Components in main menu.
  • Browse com_fireboard_v1.0.5RC2_b817_2008-10-27 file you've just downloaded earlier.
  • Hit Upload Files & Install button to upload it.
  • If you succeed, it'll said "Upload component - Success ... [Continue...]"
  • Go to Components/FireBoard Forum in main menu and configure it the way you like.
That is all. Here is the site: Home Based Online Business Opportunities - Forum. Check it out. What do you think?

How to Optimize Your Joomla! Website?

If you have a Joomla! website, you probably realize that you get many duplicated titles and descriptions especially for those pages generating by components. How can you avoid situations like that? There is one unique way to solve these problems but first you need to install Sh404Sef. If you did not install it yet, this post, Which Joomla! Sef is better? OpenSEF or Sh404SEF?, will show you how.

Now that you've installed Sh404Sef, you need to login to your Joomla! administrator's interface (backend).

  • Click on Components/sh404SEF on the menu bar.
  • A new interface is open; click on View/Edit SEF Urls.
  • Select the item you want to optimize; click on New Meta.
  • Type in a title in a Title tag, a description in a Description tag, and keywords in Keywords tag.
  • Click Save which is at the upper right hand side corner to save it.
You have to repeat the last three steps for each of the items you want to optimize. After that you can check each of your website pages by clicking on it; then select View/Page Source from your browser's menu bar; you can see that each page has its own title, description, and keywords. Thus avoid duplicated title, description, and keywords.

For the home page, click on Components/sh404SEF on the menu bar from backend; click on Home page Meta which is on the upper right hand side corner; type in main title in a Title tag, main descriptions in a Description tag, and keywords in Keywords tag. Redesign My Website's Header

This week I redesigned my website's header. My Goodness, it is a lot of work. In order to do that I have to study my website's CSS file, find all the images that are related to my template's header, download them using FTP to my laptop. Then I have to use a simple program, Paint, to redesign these images. Together I have to modify bannerbg.gif, bodybg.gif, logo.gif, and searchbg.gif. Basically I have to change colors for each of them, tried to find the right color to match some of the images, and finally upload them to my template's image folder. This processing has been tried for numerous ten times if it is not a hundred times. Whew! The old header looks like this before: Old HeaderNow the new header looks like this:New Header Here is my website. What do you think?

Update: I've changed my website's template again. If you click on the above link, you'll see the new look and not the old one shown above any more.

Joom!Fish - Multilingual Support for Joomla! 1.0.x

Two weeks ago I set up a Joomla! website for my sister. This week I installed Joom!Fish for her. Joom!Fish is an add-on component for Joomla! It allows you to manage multilingual contents within this CMS (Content Management System). In order to make it work, you have to find and download language pack(s) to go with it. The latest version of Joom!Fish is JoomFish_1.8.2. It is stable and compatible with Joomla! 1.0.x. Download JoomFish_1.8.2.zip here if you are interested.

  • Login to your Joomla! interface, click on Installers/Components/ on the menu bar.
  • Do not unzip the file you've downloaded earlier.
  • Browse JoomFish_1.8.2.zip file and click on Upload File & Install button.
  • If you've succeeded, you'll see Multilingual Content Manager for Joomla! shows up.
Here is the rest of the page says,

"Welcome to the Joom!Fish

Please make sure you read the following instructions carefully and try out a first example. After that you will find additional information, tutorials and support on the Joom!Fish website.
The Joom!Fish component supports you with design and creation of multilingual websites. This topic itself isn't that easy and so the handling of this component isn't easy.

This version of the Joom!Fish is only working together with the Joomla Version 1.0.7+. If you have a different version please refer to the project site to get a suitable version.

1. Step: Language installation

The first step is the installation of standard Joomla! language files. Those files can be found on the Joomla! extension website.
Please install all languages (there is no limit) you like to use within your site - using the Site -> Languages -> Install function.

2. Step: Language configuration

After you have done the language installation it is needed to activate the languages and give them a "natural" name and some other configuration values. This is done with the language configuration of the Joom!Fish (Components -> Joom!Fish -> Languanges).

First check: When you change the languages within the frontend (Solarflar template is patched) then all static text should change.

How to translate content?

After you are sure that the basic configuration of your site works for the static text translations let's try to translate dynamic content that is included in the database.

3. Step: Translation of information in the database

For the first simple test we try to translate the menu names in your website. For this please go to the control panel and select the function Translation. In this translation overview first select the language into which you like to translate. Then select the "content element" Menus. After you did that you get a list of all menus existing in the database. With selection the menu type "mainmenu" you reduce the list to all menu items used within this menu definition. Please translate all the menu items by clicking on the title name. It is important that the translation is published (last column).

Second check: When you change the languages within the frontend then the menu should show your translated menu names.

4. Step: Translation of additional information

For all other dynamic content within your database the translation process is exactly as described in step 3. For 3rd party Joomla! extensions you might need to install additional content element files with the configuration.

A Security Warning Message in Joomla! 1.0.12 Backend?

If you own a self-hosted blog/website, you probably can install other free CMS (Content Management System) such as Drupal, Joomla!, Mambo, to name a few in your web server. This week I was asked to set up a Joomla! website for my sister - Starrli Point of Sale Software in PowWeb - a web server. Setting up this website is not hard. I just followed the instructions provided by PowWeb and it did not take me that long to do so. However, after I've installed that, two drawbacks I realized:

  • PowWeb failed to provide the newest Joomla! version for upgrading. The latest version she can get is Joomla! 1.0.12. I might have to manually upgrade to the newest one for her if necessary.

  • There is a security warning message showing up on her Joomla! admin area (backend) after logging in; see the screenshot below:A Warning Message
Initially when I first saw the warning message, I though about of fixing it by turn it off in globals.php file. However, I was not sure that is the right way to do. I was thinking there might be other way to fix this problem. So I search the web for an answer using Google Search Engine; and I found the solution to it in a forum. Here is the solution to it:
Use FTP to download globals.php file to your PC (Personal Computer) from this folder /htdocs/(same as /public_html/); find line 24, change

PHP Code:
define( 'RG_EMULATION', 0 );

To
PHP Code:
define( 'RG_EMULATION', 1 );

After you've done that, save globals.php file, and upload it back to the same folder that you've downloaded it. I tested it out and the problem now is solved.

Upgrading Joomla! 1.0.x to Joomla! 1.0.15

Joomla! 1.0.15 was released on Friday, February 22, 2008. It addresses a security vulnerability and recommends that you upgrade to it immediately. I use midPhase as my web server host. It is so easy to upgrade from there. It did not take me more than five minutes to do so. In case anything goes wrong you should always back up your old version's files to your personal computer. After you've done that, follow these steps to upgrade to Joomla! 1.0.15:

  • Login to your midPhase's cPanel.
  • Find Scripts & Programs.
  • Click on Fantastico/Joomla/Upgrade to Joomla! 1.0.15.
That is all you need to do. As an alternative option, you can download Joomla! 1.0.15 here; follow these step-by-step instructions to upgrade to it. One more thing I have to mention here, that is if your live site used Joomla! 1.0.x version earlier than Joomla! 1.0.13, then you need to add the following code to your configuration.php file; find out how to add it from the screenshot below:
<?php
if(!defined('RG_EMULATION')) { define( 'RG_EMULATION', 0 ); }

$mosConfig_MetaAuthor = '1';
$mosConfig_MetaDesc = '';
$mosConfig_MetaKeys = '';
$mosConfig_MetaTitle = '1';

This file is located in the root directory of your Joomla! website. Adding if(!defined('RG_EMULATION')) { define( 'RG_EMULATION', 0 ); } line to configuration.php file will protect your live site against possible remote file inclusion.

Why Do Images Disappear From My Joomla! Website?

Images from my Joomla! website have been working fine. However about two weeks ago, they magically disappeared from my website. I upgraded Joomla! 1.0.13 to Joomla! 1.0.14 last week. Nevertheless that did not solve the problem.

I searched Joomla! support forum; no answers there either. I am still searching a solution for solving this problem; no luck so far. I am not sure what the cause is. Could Joomla! JCE editor contribute to that problem? In order to confirm that question, I switched back to Joomla! default editor - TinyMCE. However, the problem still exists. I even downloaded JoomlaFCK - a super-fast and lightweight WYSIWYG editor for Joomla! Content Management System. That does not solve the problem.

It seems the problem has nothing to do with editors; but then what is the cause? When I used Edit HTML Source from the menu of the editor, images show up in the edit area at backend. I can see images emerge when using Preview function. However after I saved it, I sometimes saw the images when I first loaded the webpage; then it would disappear like a magic after reloading it; very strange. The images only work if they are not clickable. Anybody knows what is going on? or do you have the same situation like mine? Your comments or advice are highly appreciated.

Update: Images in my Joomla! website have been solved automatically after I changed my Security Program on my PC (Personal Computer).

JooFox Content Title Creates Dynamic Title For a Joomla! Website

I did some research this week. I found out how to show titles dynamically for a Joomla 1.0.x website - what I mean is that when you click on each page of your website, it will show its own title on top of the title bar. It is so cool to see that. If you are curious, I'll show you how you can create a website like that. It will be beneficial in terms of Search Engine Optimization too.

In order to do that, you need to download JooFox Content Title here - It is a plug-in (Mambot). JooFox Content Title helps you to create a dynamic title for each page of your website. What you need to do is to write your desired keyword into the TITLE ALIAS of every item. It will appear as TITLE of the respective page. The installation is very simple. Just follow the steps below:

  • After you downloaded bot_joofox_ctitle.zip file; do not unzip it
  • Go to you admin area, click on Installers/Mambots on the menu bar
  • Click on Browse button to find bot_joofox_ctitle.zip file from your local computer
  • Click on Upload File & Install button to upload it
  • If you are succeeded; click on Mambots/Site Mambots on the menu bar and publish it
I found this plug-in very useful and wanted to share it with you. It does what it says. If you have a Joomla! webwite, definitely you should use JooFox Content Title to optimize it.

Update: Also check out JooFox Content Header Creates Dynamic Header Tag for a Joomla! Website here.

Which Joomla! Sef is better? OpenSEF or Sh404SEF?

Both OpenSEF and Sh404SEF are Joomla! components. They are purposely designed to rewrite Joomla urls to a more user-friendly format. Sh404SEF is the best plug-in for search engine friendly urls so far and it is FREE. A couple improvements have been made since OpenSEF.

  • It is secure and manages title & meta tags
  • It is optional to work with/without .htaccess file
  • It handles header a lot better than OpenSEF
  • It produces valid page not found 404 errors
  • Its speed is fast in terms of caching
  • It uses small DB (database) queries
  • It eliminates duplicated links
If you are interested, download com_sh404SEF_Version_1.3_RC_build_150.joomla.zip here. The installation is very easy. Just follow the instructions below to install it:
  • Do not unzip the file you just downloaded
  • Go to your admin area, click on Installers/Components on the menu bar
  • Find the url that you just downloaded com_sh404SEF_Version_1.3_RC_build_150.joomla.zip file, and click on Upload File & Install button
  • If you succeed, sh404SEF should show up in the Components tag
  • Click on Modules/Site Modules on the menu bar, make sure sh404SEF Custom tags module is the last module published, and make sure you publish it in the last module position in your template; otherwise it won't work properly.
  • Click on Components/sh404SEF on the menu bar and click on Click here to switch to extended display (with all available parameters) button on the upper right corner
  • Make sure you click on sh404SEF Configuration button, and configure it to meet your needs
If you did not have enabled Joomla Default SEF in Site/Global Configuration area, check Extension - The OpenSEF Component For Joomla! 1.0.x to get that done. Follow instructions there to make changes to .htaccess file or you can check Sh404SEF documentations out; they tell you exactly what you need to do.

Two problems I found so far. One of them is my Sitemap is still looking like this: http://www.internetoutput.com/component/option,com_sefservicemap/Itemid,40/ which I don't like it. I created an url using View/Edit Custom Redirects. However it doesn't seem to be working.

Another problem is that I don't like index.php showing up in my urls. I found the solution for this from Joomla Forum. Go to Components/sh404SEF on the menu bar, click on sh404SEF Configuration, click on Advanced tag, find Rewriting Mode?, change it to be with .htaccess (mod_rewrite), and save it. I tested my website and it works!

Update: Sitemap link has been fixed. Now it looks like the way that is supposed to be: http://www.internetoutput.com/sitemap.

Switching Joomla! Default Editor TinyMCE to JCE

Want to have a better editor for your Joomla! website? Here I am going to introduce you to a newly released editor, JCE (Joomla Content Editor), for your Joomla! site. It is FREE to download, easy to install, and convenient to use. It is awesome for some functions such as Advanced Image/Media and File handling, Plugin Support, and an Administration interface for editor configuration.

I installed it and I love it. It makes upload images, videos, photos a lot easier. Everything is being done through the editor's interface area. If your want to have this amazing editor, download it here. The latest release is bot_jce_118.zip. After you download it, follow these instructions to install it:

  • First you have to download admin component com_jce_111.zip here and do not unzip it
  • Go to your admin area and click on Installers/Components on the menu bar
  • Browse the url you just downloaded com_jce_111.zip file; click on the Upload File & Install button
  • After you succeed, you can see JCE Admin under Components tag on the menu bar
  • Go to your admin area; click on Installers/Mambots on the menu bar
  • Locate the url you downloaded bot_jce_118.zip file (do not unzip this file); click on the Upload File & Install button
  • If you succeed, click on Mambot/Site Mambot on the menu bar, and publish it
  • Click on Site/Global Configuration on the menu bar; change Default WYSIWYG Editor to JCE Editor Mambot
Some people have problems with JCE, a trick to fix the problems is that you have to set your admin login page the same url as your configuration url. For example, if your configuration url is http://www.yoursite.com, then your admin login page should set to be http://www.yoursite.com/administrator and not http://yoursite.com/administrator.

Another problem is how to fix the editor's content background color. The default color came with whatever your template's background color is and it is very hard to see what you type. Create a file and name it editor_content.css. Open the file and put the following code there and save it:

body{

    margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: left; background: white; background-image: none;
}

Upload this file to the folder as root_directory/templates/your_template/css/editor_content.css. Go to your admin area and click on Components/JCE Admin/JCE Configuration on the menu bar. Change Template CSS classes to 'No'. Type editor_content.css in Custom CSS classes and save it. Hope you enjoy this amazing editor like I do.

Extension - The OpenSEF Component For Joomla! 1.0.x

What is The OpenSEF? It is an open source advanced Search Engine Friendly component for Joomla!. It enables automatic search engine friendly URLs for Joomla! core components and manual text-based search engine friendly URLs for 3rd-party developer components. Moreover SEO Assistant adds many search engine optimization tools.

With this extension your URLs will become more friendly to the Search Engines. Instead of your URL looks like this http://www.yoursite.com/index.php? option=com_weblinks&Itemid=23, it will look like this http://www.yoursite.com/web_links.html. You can tell that the latter one is more readable by Search Engines. Thus it is called Search Engine Friendly URL.

Download OpenSEF for Joomla! 1.0.x here: the latest release is joomla_com_opensef_2.0.0-RC5_SP2.zip. Here RC means 'Release Candidate' - meaning it is not final. It is not recommended for production sites because it may contain bugs. However, I've already installed it because many sites are using it without problems. I don't see any problem to my website either. If you want to go on, follow the instructions below:

  • Do not unzip the file you just downloaded
  • Login to your admin area, click on Installers/Components on the menue bar
  • Browse the URL of your downloaded joomla_com_opensef_2.0.0-RC5_SP2.zip file, then click on Upload File & Install button
  • If it is succeeded, click on Site/Global Configuration on the menu bar, and click on SEO tag
  • Once it is open, click 'yes' for Search Engine Friendly URLs
  • Make sure you rename htaccess.txt(which should be in the root directory of your website) to be .htaccess
  • On the menu bar, click on Components/OpenSEF/Configuration, set OpenSEF Enable? to be 'yes', and save it
  • Download .htaccess file, open it, and find Begin - Joomla! core Section; Comment this section out (put # in front of each line in this section)
  • Scroll down, find Begin - 3rd Party SEF Section; Comment this section in (take out # that is in front of each line in this section)
  • If the line, Option +FollowSymLinks, causes problems with your server configurations, comment it out too
  • Finally save .htaccess file, upload it to you root directory of your server, and now you can check your URLs to see whether they changed to be Search Engine Friendly URLs
If you have any doubts, please ask or leave any advice or comments.

How to Add a Header Tag in Your Joomla! Website?

In Search Engine Optimization - Part 1, I emphasized the importance of putting your keywords inside your header tag. It will increase your PageRank in Google or other search engines! Don't confuse the header section with the header tag. For example, header section looks like this: <title>your website's title here</title> while header tag looks like this: <h1>your keywords here</h1>.

I've been trying so hard to find out the answer of how to add a header tag in an index.php file; if it is just a html file, then it is easy; just add your header tag in the body section of the file. However my website is created using Joomla! 1.0.13. That means I have to deal with a php file. This file is dynamically linked to other files. You just cannot insert <h1>your keywords here</h1> into the body section of you index.php file. So how can you do that? Here is the solution for you:

  • Login to your admin area; click on Installers/Mambots on the menu bar
  • Browse the URL of your downloaded bot_joomSEO_1.1.6.zip file, then click on Upload File & Install button
  • If it is succeeded, click on Mambots/Site Mambots on the menu bar
  • Now you can see JoomSEO is on the list; make sure you publish it

The Ninth Week of My Online Business

This week I dumped the website that Ultimate Wealth Package had provided. I spent lots of time putting up my new website using Joomla! - one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems. It is FREE to download, easy to install, and simple to manage. Moreover it is reliable and is used all over the world.

It doesn't matter where you live or what language you speak, Joomla! is targeted for international users. It is used for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. For instructions on how to install and use Joomla!, you can visit Joomla! Tutorials.

Many templates are available on the Internet. However, some of them want you to sign up for free templates while many of them require you to pay. For your convenience, I have found over a thousand free templates you can download for use. To find out more about Joomla!, please visit Joomla!'s forum.
